THE MUSEUM IS THE WORLD
the museum talks to a new audience

In 2003 the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium launched a new project to widen its public. The project is focused on people who, as a result of their cultural and economical background rarely or never visit museums and therefore have little or no knowledge of our cultural heritage. A variety of social and social-cultural organisations joined us in this venture.

The museums started a program to establish a bilateral dialogue with different social groups, including children, youngsters and adults, in order to make them aware of their cultural heritage. They are stimulated to broaden their access to our heritage by pointing out the possibilities to claim their cultural rights.

The educational department conceptualised new methods and materials in order to meet different ages, cultures and backgrounds. A group of volunteers and museum staff meet on a regular basis to guide the project’s development and active members of the target public are trained to accommodate different groups in the museums and familiarise them with its contents.

A synthesis of the project’s results will be published and discussed in a concluding panel with the objective to share our experience with other museums and organisations.
